As from this Sunday, we will be in the season of Advent. This is the Church’s time of expectation, when we look forward with renewed hope to the birth of the Christ child, the Prince of Peace, Emmanuel (God with us). We also look ahead to warm weather, annual vacations and pleasing exam results.
Advent also marks the start of the Church’s year and the conclusion of our year of commemoration of the 300th anniversary of the death of St John Baptist de La Salle who died in Rouen, France in 1719 after establishing a legacy that survives and thrives to this day. In 1900 he was canonised a saint and in 1950 was made the patron saint of teachers of the youth. One of the ways our school remembers him is in our stained glass Chapel window. We farewell more staff than usual this year. There is nothing to be read into that. It’s just atypical for us.
Pam Low, who is also retiring, has served us as a teachers’ aide for nine years. Cath Spindler has been with us for seven years and for most of that time has been technician for science and art. This year, as a teacher trainee, she has also assisted with agriculture and science teaching. Cath will move to teach in Te Aroha. Matt Lash has led our Physical Education and Outdoor Education department for 5 ½ years and is moving into the private sector into similar work. Anton Berndt has been with us for two years and after obtaining his full registration as a teacher, is taking up a part time position in a local school. Karen Taylor has taught mathematics with us for one year. I wish all of these folk well with gratitude for the way they have touched hearts, taught minds and transformed lives.
The holidays will see some property work around the school. A start should be made on our refurbishment of a careers centre in the previous art room and there will be a science laboratory refit. Reports for Year 7 to 10 students are due home soon. They contain a wealth of information to discuss with your sons. Our famous Gala will be held on Saturday 4 April next year. Please mark it on your calendar now and think about what you can offer. That may involve your voluntary time, donated goods, white elephant items (no old TVs please) or donated cash. We will be seeking support from you in the new year. May you enjoy the increased hours of company you can share with your wonderful sons over the holiday period. God bless and Merry Christmas.
